E-boosting into summer
New bike, who dis?
I got an electric bike for my birthday, and now I am a superhero. I’ve got gentle superhero energy—not superhero in a cape, but superhero just before she goes full out and tears off her street clothes.
The bike has three levels of “boost.” If I power on and click it up to three, I can start cold and pedal straight up our steep driveway with a brief moment of exertion and then a kind of WHOOSH. It’s so subtle, it feels like I’m doing it on my own. Like I’ve got this low-key, effortless power.
I’m e-boosting into summer.
Into writing the screenplay I outlined at Ucross last fall.
I’ve got the first sequence down. I know what comes next. I’ve set up a writing studio in the one-room cabin we refer to as the chicken coop. (The current structure was rebuilt on the footprint of the former coop, from when the property was a working farm. Lots of history on that spot. We lived in the actual coop for a year when I was nine, while M was building our house.)
I’m determined to get down a full draft of the script by August 31.
Riding my bike to the studio in the morning, I’m channeling the feeling of elation I had at Ucross.
Speaking of elation...
U.S. friends, please buy or rent Where in the Hell on Amazon and leave a short review!! It doesn’t have to be artfully written. Every “I enjoyed this film so much!” (thank you shrinkrap) or “Everyone ever that’s smoked too much weed at a strangers house can relate to the bathroom scene 😂” (eeeeep Naomi) makes a huge difference.

This month in print: I loved Solvej Balle’s On the Calculation of Volume (Book I), though it left me lonely. It’s a very lonely little book. As you may or may not be aware, there are six more volumes to come. I’m not sure I can hack six more... And yet. I’m dying to see what Balle does within the minimalist Groundhog Day confines she’s set for herself. One woman doomed to repeat a single day over and over. FOR SEVEN VOLUMES. Respect.
